Located in the Idduki district of the Indian state of Kerala, Munnar is a small, hilly town fondly known as the “Kashmir of South India”. Situated at a height of 1,600 meters above sea level, Munnar is nestled deep in the Nilgiri Hills of the Western Ghats mountains. Munnar derives its name from a local language, roughly translating to “three rivers” due to the confluence of Rivers Madhuripuza, Kundaly and Nallathanni at Munnar.
Munnar is most famous for its massive tea plantations that attract tourists from India and abroad. Another thing Munnar is famous for is the neelakurinji flowers, a beautiful fragrant purple-blue coloured flower that only blooms once in 12 years. Munnar is also located around a number of protected nature reserves, making it home to a number of unique plants and animals species.
